da Vinci Surgery at Delnor

Delnor Offers the Latest Approach to Minimally Invasive Surgery

Until recently, surgery patients had to choose between traditional "open" surgery with a large incision or laparoscopy, which uses small incisions but cannot be used for all procedures. Now there is an innovative option -- the da Vinci® Surgical robot, which uses breakthrough technology to provide a minimally invasive alternative that can be used for many complex surgical procedures.

Because this technology uses fewer, smaller incisions patients benefit from:

  • Significantly less post-operative pain
  • Less blood loss
  • Less scarring
  • Drastically shorter recovery time
  • A faster return to normal daily activities

da Vinci Robotic Surgical System

The da Vinci System allows the surgeon to insert miniature instruments and a tiny high-definition, three-dimensional camera into a patient's body. Seated at the da Vinci console, your surgeon views a magnified high-resolution, 3-D image of the surgical site.

Your surgeon uses the console's hand controls to guide the robotic arms which hold laparoscopic surgical instruments. State-of-the-art robotic and computer technology converts the surgeon's large hand movements into precise small movements, resulting in tremendous dexterity. The robotic "wrists" can rotate a full 360 degrees, enabling your surgeon to control the miniature surgical instruments with unprecedented accuracy, flexibility and range of motion. The da Vinci System requires that every surgical maneuver be performed with direct input from your surgeon - the machine cannot move on its own.

Delnor Hospital is one of the first hospitals in Illinois to use the very latest Si HD version of the da Vinci technology to perform minimally invasive procedures. Gynecologists and urologists perform many procedures using the da Vinci such as:

  • Hysterectomy- A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of a woman's uterus.  The procedure is used to treat cancer, fibroids, uncontrollable bleeding, chronic pain and other disabling conditions.
  • Myomectomy - A myomectomy is the surgical removal of uterine fibroids, which are non-cancerous growths on a woman's uterus. It is estimated that 20 to 40 percent of women between the ages of 35 to 55 experience symptoms from fibroids that can be very uncomfortable.

The surgeons performing da Vinci hysterectomies and myomectomies: Susan Acuna, M.D., Meera Atkins, M.D., Jennifer Lew, M.D. and Jonathan Song, M.D.

  •  Prostatectomy - A prostatectomy is the surgical removal of the cancerous prostate gland and  related structures.

The surgeons performing da Vinci prostatectomies: Gustavo Banti, M.D.; Michael Rashid, M.D.
